I review the Brinyte HL16 – a miniature and versatile 2-in-1 EDC flashlight and headlamp!

Brinyte HL16 Review
General thoughts after a week of usage/size comparison/practicality/interesting things:
• So recently I reviewed the HL18 and was pretty impressed with the design and versatility of the adjustable head. Having a look at the Brinyte catalog, I realized they also had this smaller version available – the HL16! This is a great lightweight headlamp and EDC flashlight for those of you who need a more portable option, maybe something you can put into a pouch, bag, or pocket, but still has some decent output.
• What you get in the box: mount + headband, 16340 battery, magnetic charging cable, spare o-rings.
• Comparison with HL18, Acebeam H16, Nextorch Max Star.
Overall Construction, LED, lens, bezel and reflector
• Brinyte is one of the better brands out there, as they use quality electronics, regulated drivers, and have good quality control with their lights. The HL16 is constructed well – there are no rough spots or inconsistencies in the machining. The anodizing is slightly glossy and slippery. Single clip on the side with two attachment points. Large rubber button and battery indicator/charger on the other side. The switch requires a firm press to activate which will help prevent accidental activation.
• The HL16 has a 90-degree adjustable head which allows you to use it as a headlamp or normal flashlight. The headlamp mount rotates 180 degrees and fits onto a single band.
• XP-G3 LED paired with TIR lens. The crenulated bezel design and blue accent are a nice touch.
UI – modes
• Press and hold to turn on. Press once to cycle moon/LMH.
Performance – total output, beam profile, longevity, practicality
• Ceiling bounce test, CRI, CCT
• Even hotspot with decent throw. You need to ramp it up to medium/high for any significant flood.
Considerations
• Low battery capacity but CR123 compatible which is useful in emergencies.
• 520 lumen output. This should be enough for most purposes but it’s not a lumen monster.
• Dust in joint? Something that is difficult to avoid with this kind of design.
• Pricier than other headlamps, especially budget ones. But it does come with some unique features like magnetic charging + regulated output.
Verdict
• The HL16 is a great 2-in-1 miniature flashlight if you’re looking for something unique and versatile. 520 lumens may not sound like much but it’s more than enough for walks, as a worklight, around the house for odd jobs. Regulated output is important for me, so the light remains constant during use. The ability to use CR123 primaries is a huge bonus as it means the light won’t become an expensive paperweight in a power outage.
