I review my first pair of night vision binoculars! These were mind-blowing for me as a first-timer to night vision. It even records in full HD and takes 10-megapixel photos.

GT Media N4 Review – Best Value Entry Level Night Vision?

General thoughts after a week of usage/size comparison/practicality/interesting things:
โ€ข Imagine seeing what’s going on from a distance in complete darkness. Since I was a kid, I’ve always wanted a pair of night vision goggles. Maybe itโ€™s from the video games, Call of Duty, halo, etc. I kinda forgot about them until recently while researching thermal cameras. GT Media contacted me to send a sample of their N4 for this review. This entry-level night vision (Gen 0) device relies on an IR camera and 3W 850nm IR LED. It’s nowhere near military-grade night vision, but it’s pretty impressive for what it is, especially if you’ve never used these devices before.
โ€ข What you get in the box.

Overall Construction, analog functioning, LED, lens.
โ€ข Weights around 400 grams which is lighter than expected. Made of tough ABS, and feels sturdy. Itโ€™s also IP6 water-resistant. Each eyepiece is adjustable through some dials – in case you wear glasses or have one weaker eye. There is one dial at the rear to adjust image focus, similar to a pair of binoculars. Physical buttons on top of the N4 + head mount. There is a USB-C port and micro-SD slot under the port cover to the side. Underneath, there is a tripod mount.
โ€ข Eye pieces feel soft and comfortable – made of rubber or silicone. The camera is located on the right lens. To the left, there is a 3W 850Nnm IR LED – it emits a barely visible red glow when switched on. There is an audible click when you activate the night vision mode – it might be an IR filter sliding into place.
โ€ข Up to 10MP photos and 720-1080p video. 5x digital zoom. 320×320 TFT screen. There’s an F1.2 aperture which is very wide in camera terms, meaning it lets it a lot of light. 2000mAh battery – 5 hours runtime with IR on, 10 hours with IR off.

UI – modes, performance – video footage.
โ€ข Walk-through modes, menus, etc.
โ€ข Video footage, video with external IR flashlight to extend range.

Considerations
โ€ข The micro-SD slot is difficult to access and install the card, especially while youโ€™re charging the N4. Thankfully, you don’t actually have to remove the card – if you plug the device in, and switch it on, there is an MTP mode that pops up that you can select which will give you access to the card.
โ€ข A proper 1x mode would have been useful for night vision mode. The lowest setting is zoomed in a fair bit with a narrow field of view. So walking with this device is a bit awkward. I think this device is best suited when used from a static position when spotting. A counter weight on the rear would also help with neck strain.
โ€ข Digital zoom – it’s useful but lossy, so the image gets grainier and less detailed the more you zoom in.

Verdict
As a newcomer to night vision, the GT Media N4 was pretty amazing. Coming from not being able to see in the dark at all, to get a bright and detailed image is like having a new ability and advantage in various situations! I could imagine pulling these out if I heard some sounds across the street or in the backyard. For hunters, this is a great value entry-level option, and as it generates no visible light, you remain completely undetectable to animals.
