How good can an affordable digital night vision device actually be?
This is the Goyojo GNG2K, a compact 2K digital night vision device that has genuinely surprised me during my review/testing.
There are plenty of inexpensive digital night vision devices available, but many of them are bulky, poorly built and struggle badly in low light. The GNG2K takes a different approach, combining a 2K CMOS sensor rated at 0.0001 lux with a compact, pocketable design and 60Hz real-time imaging.
The result is surprisingly clear night-time vision, even in extremely low-light conditions.
In this review I’ll take you through the build quality, optics, controls, display, focusing system, image quality, low-light performance, digital zoom, IR illumination, battery, recording capabilities and real-world performance.
I’ll also take it outdoors to see how it performs in genuinely dark conditions and compare what I can see through the GNG2K with what my eyes can see.
One particularly interesting feature is the built-in 940nm IR illuminator. Unlike the more common 850nm IR illuminators, 940nm is designed to be much less visibly noticeable, making it useful when you don’t want an obvious red glow.
The GNG2K can also be used handheld or mounted to different setups, and it includes a replaceable 18500 battery, microSD recording and an integrated compass.
There are some compromises, including limited digital zoom, an imperfect companion app, short-range IR illumination and some plastic construction that I’d like to see upgraded.
But considering that analogue night vision can cost several times more, I was genuinely impressed by what this compact digital device can achieve.
So is the Goyojo GNG2K actually worth buying as an entry-level night vision device?
