I’ve reviewed a lot of tech and gadgets over the years, but I honestly didn’t expect a desk lamp to become one of my most useful tools.
This is the brand new BenQ ScreenBar Max, a glare-shielded desk lighting system designed for larger and even dual-monitor setups.
After using it for a week for YouTube, product reviews, photography, editing and artwork, I can see why I ended up using it so much.
The ScreenBar Max mounts directly above your monitor, freeing up valuable desk space while producing a huge, smooth area of high-quality light.
It uses BenQ’s ASYM-TriZone Light technology to direct light onto your desk while preventing it from shining directly into your eyes, and the 95 CRI LEDs provide excellent colour rendering for creative work.
It also has some genuinely interesting features, including continuously adjustable brightness and colour temperature, rear-facing high-CRI lighting and a mmWave radar sensor that detects when you’re approaching or leaving your desk and automatically switches or adjusts the lighting.
I’ve also put it through my usual testing, including colour temperature, CRI, brightness and sustained output measurements.
For me, one of the biggest advantages is that it can potentially replace multiple lights around my desk. I previously used a conventional desk lamp and a ring light, both of which took up valuable space and constantly needed repositioning.
The ScreenBar Max doesn’t replace a dedicated video light for illuminating your face, but for desk-based work, art and content creation, it’s become one of the most useful pieces of equipment on my desk.
There are a couple of things I’d change – particularly the lack of a wireless remote… and it’s definitely more expensive than a basic desk lamp.
But is the extra cost actually worth it?
